Flying Spare Tire Seriously Injures 21-Year-Old Driver On Parkway In South Toms River: Police

A spare tire sent flying on the Garden State Parkway left a 21-year-old motorist seriously injured on Friday, Oct. 18, police said.

The Flemington woman was operating a Volkswagen passenger vehicle in the southbound lanes when a spare wheel became dislodged from another vehicle in the northbound lanes around 3:25 p.m. in South Toms River, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said.

The tire crossed the center concrete barrier, entered the southbound lanes, and struck the left-side windshield and roof of the woman's vehicle. As a result of the crash, 

The driver sustained serious injuries. 

The crash remains under investigation, and there is no additional information available.
